Surety Bonds

Contract Bond

is used to guarantee that a contractor will perform work as agreed on the construction contract.  If the work is not performed to the specifications of the contract, the insurance company will pay up to the amount listed on the contract bond. 

        Examples of a contract bond are:

            Bid Bond

                    a guarantee that a contractor will enter into a contract.

            Payment Bond

                    this bond guarantees that a contractor will pay for services and materials.

            Performance Bond

                    guarantees that the contractor will complete the work as specified by the contract.

            Maintenance Bond

                    is a guarantee that the contractor will provide upkeep of a facility for a specific time frame.


Commercial Bond

This bond is required by the state, city, and local government before a someone can legally operate a business.  There are a large number of commercial bonds available which depends on the type of business services or products being provided.

Some examples of commercial bonds include: auto dealer bond, auction bond, broker bond, and janitorial bond.  It is imperative to know if a bond is required by the state and/or local government as part of your business venture planning.

Court Bond

A court bond is a dollar amount that must be paid by a defendent standing trial in a criminal case.  This bond is to ensure that the defendent will return to trial.  A defendent can be remanded and denied bail.  In this case he would be held in jail until his court appearance trial date.

The cost of a surety bond is dependent on a number of factors such as the credit history of the person applying for the bond, in addition to the bond type.  Generally, a surety bond is approximately 1-3% of the face value of the surety bond.
